Little Things to Look Forward to When Summer Comes to an End
There’s something slightly bittersweet about the end of summer.
The evenings slowly start getting darker, holidays come to an end, and suddenly September is appearing on the calendar. The back-to-school season is here, routines are returning, and the carefree feeling of summer starts to fade.
But before we get too sad about saying goodbye to sunshine and long evenings, let’s remember something: there are plenty of little things to look forward to about the season changing.
At The Little Things Company, we’re big believers in finding joy in the small stuff. And autumn has a lot of small stuff to get excited about.
✏️ The Back-to-School Stationery Feeling
You might have left school years ago, but tell me you don’t still get slightly excited about September stationery.
There’s something ridiculously satisfying about a brand-new notebook, fresh pens, a new diary or a beautifully organised desk.
September has that fresh page feeling without the pressure of January resolutions. You can reset your routines, reorganise your workspace and get excited about having somewhere lovely to write down your plans.
Sometimes a new notebook really is enough to make you feel like you have your life together.
☕ Cosy Drinks Are Coming Back
Summer iced coffees have had their moment. Now it’s time to make room for the cosy drinks.
Hot chocolates. Chai lattes. Big mugs of tea. Coffee on a chilly morning.
There’s something wonderful about being able to wrap your hands around a warm mug again after months of reaching for something cold.
And honestly, is there anything better than drinking something warm while it rains outside?
🧦 Cosy Socks, Blankets and Early Nights
One of the best things about autumn is finally being allowed to embrace staying in.
Cosy socks come out of the drawer. Blankets return to the sofa. Fairy lights start getting switched on earlier.
And suddenly an evening at home doesn’t feel like you’re missing out.
It feels like exactly where you want to be.
A film, a book, your favourite snacks and an unnecessarily large blanket? Sounds pretty perfect to us.
🍂 Looking Forward to Autumn Without Rushing Summer
It’s easy to feel like you have to choose between loving summer and being excited for autumn.
You don’t.
You can be sad that the evenings are getting shorter while also looking forward to crisp mornings, changing leaves and cosy nights.
You can miss beach days while getting excited about your favourite jumper.
You can wish summer would last forever and still be delighted when you spot the first golden leaves.
Life is allowed to have seasons - and there’s something lovely about letting yourself enjoy each one.
📚 More Time for the Things You Love
As summer social plans begin to calm down, autumn can create a little more space for hobbies.
Maybe you want to:
Get back into reading
Start painting again
Try a new recipe
Pick up a language you’ve been learning
Return to the gym
Have more cosy nights with friends
Finally tackle that hobby you’ve been putting off
The change in season can be a lovely excuse to reconnect with the things that make you feel like yourself.
🕯️ The Return of Cosy Homebody Season
Perhaps the biggest thing to appreciate about autumn is simply being at home.
Summer encourages us to be out constantly - and that’s wonderful. But there’s a different kind of happiness in coming home when it’s dark outside.
Switch on the fairy lights.
Make something warm to drink.
Put on your comfiest clothes.
Run a bath.
Put your phone down.
Give yourself permission to have nowhere else to be.
These tiny rituals are exactly the kind of things that make a house feel like home.
🧡 Remember the Little Things
The end of summer doesn’t mean the end of good things.
It just means the little things change.
Instead of ice creams in the sunshine, maybe it’s hot chocolate on the sofa.
Instead of late nights outside, maybe it’s early evenings with a favourite film.
Instead of summer holidays, maybe it’s planning your next adventure.
And instead of wishing the next season away, perhaps we can let ourselves enjoy what it has to offer.
Because that’s what we’re all about at The Little Things Company: celebrating the tiny details that make ordinary life feel special.
Summer might be coming to an end.
But there are still so many little things to look forward to.
